John Edward Scarlata - NovEmber 11, 1949 - June 17, 2010
23 June 2010

John Edward Scarlata, age 60, of Matney, NC, died surrounded by his family at home at 11:45 p.m. EDT, Thursday, June 17, 2010. John was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, November 11, 1949. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Adams State College of Colorado in 1972; studied photographic illustration at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA; and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from California Institute for the Arts in 1976.

John came to North Carolina in 1976 as an artist-in-residence for the North Carolina Arts Council. His move to North Carolina led to various teaching positions, including at UNC-Charlotte and Penland School of Crafts. From 1979 to 1999 he taught photography at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA. Since 1999 he has been professor and coordinator of the photography program in the Department of Technology at Appalachian State University. He received numerous awards and honors for his work over the years, most recently the Outstanding Scholarship and Creative Activities Award from ASU’s College of Fine and Applied Arts.

A past chair and conference coordinator of the Society for Photographic Education/Southeast Region, he was active in the professional development of education in his medium. John conducted landscape and documentary photographic research in Mexico, Cuba, and New Zealand, and locally documented the Junaluska community of Boone and African American farmers of Watauga County. His photography was exhibited nationally and internationally, including recent shows in Cuba and China. East Carolina State University recently sponsored a thirty-five year retrospective of his work—Living in the Light.

John was a beloved man, whose community of friends, colleagues and students stretch around the globe. He was known for his kindness, gentle strength, humility, vitality, quick wit, intelligence, and knowledge and curiosity about the world. He lovingly—and often courageously—fulfilled many roles: partner, father, artist/photographer, teacher, farmer, environmentalist, runner, surfer, craftsman, hunter, angler, great cook, good neighbor, spiritual companion, son, brother, and friend.

In many ways, John was a “keeper of the old ways.” He was attracted to and often employed time and labor intensive 19th Century photographic techniques. He built his family’s home, chiseling by hand the beams (milled from local trees) that were to make one of the first timber frame houses in the area. He got great pleasure from his garden and orchards and putting up the harvest. He had an abiding love of nature, especially the ocean—and was happiest with a fishing pole in his hands and his family by his side.

His photographic art reflected a deep communion with the natural world, while his later work documented the impact of human development on the landscape. One of his spiritual practices was to notice at least one moment of beauty in each day—even as he was dying. The beauty he saw with his keen eye was more often than not to be found in the interplay of natural forms and light. John very much lived a conscious life. His final gift on this earth was to show his family and community how to consciously die.

John is survived by his wife and life-partner of thirty-one years, Rebecca Jane Keeter, his sons, Wyatt and Silas, all of the home; his mother, Georgia Christenson Scarlata of High Point, NC; and two brothers, Vincent Scarlata and his wife, Joan of Cabot, Arkansas, and Paul Scarlata of Asheboro, NC. He is predeceased by his father and best fishing companion ever, Dr. Salvatore Scarlata (d. 2007).

There was a wake in the home on Friday evening, June 18. A memorial celebration is planned for Saturday, June 26, 2:00 p.m., at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, 170 Councill Street, Boone, NC, with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Shawneehaw Volunteer Fire Department, 171 Rominger Road, Banner Elk, NC 28604; or Valle Crucis Community Park, PO Box 581, Valle Crucis, NC 28691.

In my heart, John will always be
Just thirty minutes up the trail
Sitting on a log
Eating cheese and anchovies
Wondering what took us so long.

—Chris Smith (former student)

6 February 2008

Congratulations to Ryan Adrick and Walker Pickering, winners of the 2008 SPESE National Conference Scholarships. Ryan Adrick is an adjunct professor at Florida State University, and Walker Pickering is a student at Savannah College of Art and Design. Their portfolio submissions were selected by our juror, Amy Holmes George. Here is what Amy had to say about their work:

"Ryan’s work is really strong, and the presentation of his application materials is not only thorough and thoughtfully considered but also well written and addresses his active involvement in SPE. I especially enjoyed his succinct elaborations on each body of work."

"Walker’s images reveal an appreciation for simple beauty and his application is organized with an eye for detail. He is new to SPE but quite enthusiastic about the organization and the National Conference. Walker even plans "to create a video journal that illustrates, to those unable to attend, what occurs during and around the conference.” What a great way to share his experience with others . . ."

Ryan and Walker will both receive a $500 scholarship and registration fees to support attendance to the national SPE conference in Denver, March 13-16, 2008. They are also invited to present their work at the southeast regional conference in November. Minutes from the SPE southeast regional meeting at the regional conference
16 October 2007

Date: 10/12/07
Location: Savannah Georgia

Mark Malloy, Chair, malloyml@appstate.edu
Michael Marshall, Vice Chair/Secretary, michaeljmarshall@hotmail.com
Daniel Kariko, Treasurer, Daniel@DanielKariko.com
Blake Praytor, Newsletter Editor, blake.praytor@gvltec.edu
Heather Freeman, Website Editor, hdfreema@uncc.edu
Rebecca Nolan, Chair of Regional Conference, rnolan@scad.edu

Welcome
Mark Malloy opened the meeting and welcomed everyone to Savannah, followed by introductions from each of the 37 members present at the meeting.

Treasurer Report
Daniel Kariko reported that the region has a very healthy bank account. Current balance is $27,225. There are about $7000 in expenses from the conference still to be deducted, but also on-site registration money coming in from the conference to be added as well. Expenses for the Due South publication of regional student work are still to be deducted as well (~$3000). A new balance will be calculated in the coming weeks.

Regional Conferences:
Thanks to Rebecca Nolan and Savannah College of Art and Design for putting together another great regional conference!!!
Michael Marshall reported on the upcoming conferences:
There has been a late change in the plans for next year’s conference. Due to construction and renovation plans at the Light Factory, they are no longer able to host the conference in 2008. Greg Stewart (gtstewart@randolph.edu), department chair of the Randolph Community College Photography and Graphic Design Programs in Asheboro, NC has agreed to step in and take over the planning for the conference in 2008. Due to the late change in venues, details are still being resolved. Look for more information on the regional website www.spese.org and at the national conference in Denver.
Future conference plans include:
2009: hosted by Perry Kirk of West Georgia, to be held in Atlanta
2010: hosted by George Blakely at Florida State University
2011: hosted by Christa Bowden at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA
2012: hosted by the Light Factory in Charlotte, NC
If you are interested in hosting an upcoming conference it is not too soon to put your name on the calendar. Contact any of the regional officers for more information.

Announcements from the National level:
Mark Malloy initiated a round of applause for the national board members attending the regional meeting, thanking them for their work. He then made some announcements from the national office:
Virginia Morrison is the new executive director of SPE.
The national offices have moved to a new location in Cleveland, OH.
The vote on a change to the national bylaws on membership levels was overwhelmingly approved.
The new national SPE website has a launch date scheduled for November 15.

Due South:
The regional juried student competition Due South was a great success. Sam Wang was the juror for this competition and the accepted entries are being produced in a Blurb book. The design of the book has been completed and is in production now. Those who had work selected for the book will receive a copy of the book in the coming weeks. Books will be available to the general public through the Blurb website. Look for more information and ordering instructions on the SPESE website (www.spese.org).

Newsletter
Blake Praytor apologized for not getting a newsletter out since the national conference in March. He again expressed concern that it was not necessary with the website, and that he was not receiving any information to put into the newsletter. Michael Marshall read from the minutes of the last regional meeting that the members voted in favor of continuing the newsletter in a digital pdf format, and the national bylaws require that we will put out at least one newsletter each year. Blake agreed to put together the next newsletter and again requested content. If you have information or announcement to include please forward them to Blake at blake.praytor@gvltec.edu.

Officer Elections
Vice Chair / Secretary – Michael Marshall will be ending his term as vice chair / secretary following the national conference in 2008. The nominating committee received just one nomination for the position. That nominee is Scott Weber from Barry University. Scott will assume the position of Vice Chair following the national conference in Denver.
The next election is for the position of Chair. A call will be put forth at the national conference in Denver.

New Business
Michael Marshall opened the floor for discussion on how we can use the surplus in the region’s bank account in best service to the regional members. Discussion ensued around the idea of scholarships for the national conference. A motion was passed a year ago to ask the national scholarship committee to make a selection of winners from within our region to be funded by our region. Michael Marshall reported that he asked the national office about this, and the national office could not take on this responsibility. A scholarship such as this had to be handled internally.

A new motion was made to offer a $500 scholarship for a student from within the region to support attending the national conference. Discussion followed including a recommendation that at next year’s regional conference we have a juried student exhibition and the winner of that juried exhibition be offered the scholarship for the national conference. There was lots of support for this idea. Further discussion led to a friendly amendment to offer two $500 scholarships, one for a student and one for an adjunct faculty member within the region. This friendly amendment was voted upon and unanimously approved. Additional discussion followed with another friendly amendment to include the conference fee in the scholarship. This friendly amendment was voted upon and passed unanimously. The final vote then took place on this motion:

“Two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $500 plus the cost of the member’s conference fee to support attendance to the national SPE conference, one for a student and one for an adjunct faculty member. A juror or panel of jurors will select the winners of these two scholarships based upon the quality of a submitted application and image(s). The regional officers are charged with selecting the juror(s) for these scholarships.”

This motion was passed unanimously.

Meeting adjourned.
